San Francisco Boutique Hotels

Hand-picked small hotels across the city — character over chain branding, walkable to the cable cars, Union Square, and North Beach, and an easy car ride from everywhere else.

San Francisco has a deep bench of small, design-forward hotels — the kind with a real lobby bar, a point of view, and under a couple hundred rooms. A short list of the ones we send guests to, by neighborhood.

The Inn at Union Square

A thirty-room townhouse hotel half a block off the square — afternoon wine, a fireplace lounge, and the Powell Street cable car at the corner. About as central as boutique gets, walkable to shopping, theaters, and Chinatown.

Hotel Drisco — Pacific Heights

A 1903 Edwardian on one of the city's grandest residential hills, with bay views from the upper floors and a complimentary house car for nearby drop-offs. Quiet, refined, and a short ride from the bridge and the Marina.

The Hotel Bohème — North Beach

A tiny Beat-era hotel on Columbus Avenue in the heart of North Beach, steps from Caffe Trieste and City Lights. Small rooms, big character, the best neighborhood in the city for walking to dinner. See dining.

Argonaut Hotel — Fisherman's Wharf

A nautical-themed hotel in a converted 1907 cannery warehouse at Aquatic Park, right on the waterfront. Exposed brick and timber, bay-view rooms, and the cable-car turnaround out front. Good for a families-and-waterfront trip.

The Scarlet Huntington — Nob Hill

An intimate, old-world hotel atop Nob Hill across from Grace Cathedral, with a destination spa and the cable car at the door. The quiet, classic-San-Francisco perch above downtown.

Hotel Zephyr & the design hotels

For a more playful, modern stay, the waterfront and SoMa have a run of design-led hotels — bold interiors, rooftop bars, courtyard fire pits. Smaller rooms, fair value for the location, a younger crowd in the lobby.

How to coordinate transport

From any of these, SFO is 30–45 minutes and OAK about the same. Most guests do the long airport runs with us, walk or take the cable car around the central neighborhoods, and book the car again for a city tour day or a neighborhoods day.
