San Francisco's neighborhoods feel like different cities, and where you sleep shapes the trip. A handful of clusters cover most visitors — pick the one that matches the kind of days you want, and a chauffeur to bridge the rest.
Union Square & downtown
The central, most-hotels cluster — walkable to shopping, theaters, the cable-car lines, and a short hop to Chinatown and the Ferry Building. Big-name and grand-dame hotels (the St. Regis, the Palace, the Clift). Central for getting anywhere; not the prettiest blocks at night. SFO is 30–45 minutes south.
Nob Hill
The classic, quieter, old-money perch above downtown — the Fairmont, the Mark Hopkins, the Huntington, with the cable car running past the door and Grace Cathedral on the square. Steep walks down (and a tougher climb back), which is exactly when a car earns its keep.
Embarcadero & the waterfront
Along the bay, steps from the Ferry Building and the waterfront, with the flattest walking in the city and bay views from the higher floors. Easy out to the Bay Bridge and the airport. A good base for a food-and-waterfront trip.
The Marina & Cow Hollow
Lower-key, residential, closest to the bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts, and the Presidio. Boutique hotels and brunch spots on Union and Chestnut. Best for travelers who want neighborhood feel over downtown convenience.
Boutique vs. grand hotel
If you want small and characterful over big-and-branded, see the boutique hotel picks — most cluster around Union Square, North Beach, and Nob Hill, all walkable to the cable cars.
How to coordinate transport
Most guests do an SFO meet-and-greet, a city tour day, a neighborhoods day, a dinner-and-back run, and an airport return. We pre-stage the car for each, so the front desk doesn't need to call us — the driver is parked outside at the start time, every time.
