The waterfront is the most-walked stretch in the city and the most touristy — which means the trick is knowing what's actually worth your time between the t-shirt shops. A working fishing fleet still ties up here, the sea lions are genuinely great, and the Ferry Building has quietly become one of the best places to eat in town.
Pier 39 & the sea lions
The sea lions hauled out on the K-Dock floats are the real draw at Pier 39 — they showed up after the 1989 earthquake and never left, sometimes hundreds of them, loud and unbothered. Best in winter when the numbers peak. The pier itself is a shopping arcade; the Aquarium of the Bay at the base is a solid hour with kids.
Fisherman's Wharf proper
West of the pier, the original wharf still lands Dungeness crab and sand dabs. The walk-up crab pots and clam chowder in a bread bowl are the classic move — touristy and tasty in equal measure. Nearby: the Musée Mécanique of antique arcade machines (free to walk in), the WWII submarine USS Pampanito, and Ghirardelli Square a few blocks west for chocolate and a view back to the bridge.
The cable car turnaround
The Powell-Hyde line ends at Aquatic Park, where they spin the car by hand on a turntable. The line to board here is long; the move is to catch it from a stop higher up the hill instead, or just watch the turnaround and ride another day. We drop and collect so you're not hunting for parking near the chaos.
The Embarcadero & the Ferry Building
The Embarcadero promenade runs the bay edge from the wharf south, under the Bay Bridge, past the historic piers. At its heart, the Ferry Building marketplace — Hog Island oysters, Acme bread, Blue Bottle, and the Saturday farmers' market that's a destination on its own. Far better eating than anything on the wharf itself; see dining.
Bay cruises & Alcatraz
Bay cruises and the Alcatraz ferry leave from Pier 33, just east of Pier 39. Alcatraz sells out weeks ahead — book before you come, and take the night tour if you can. Boats run rain or shine; layer up, the bay wind has teeth. We'll drop at the dock and be there when you're back.
How a visit runs
The waterfront has nowhere good to park and street closures are common. We drop you at Pier 39 or the Ferry Building, you walk the promenade between them, and the car meets you at the far end — no parking garage, no hauling back to where you started. Pair it with the bridge or a scenic drive for a full day.
